Average Calculator
Calculate the mean of up to 10 numbers
About this calculator
The arithmetic mean is the sum of all values divided by the count of values. For 10, 20, 30: mean = (10+20+30)/3 = 20. The mean is the most common measure of central tendency, used in grades, temperatures, financial returns, and quality control. It is sensitive to outliers — one very large value can skew the mean significantly.
How to use
Enter your numbers. Grades of 70, 85, 90, 95: average = 340/4 = 85. Note: this calculator uses 5 fields; if you use fewer, set unused fields to 0 and adjust the interpretation accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?
Mean is the sum divided by count. Median is the middle value when sorted. Mode is the most frequent value. For skewed data (like incomes), median is often more representative than mean.
When is the mean misleading?
When outliers exist. If 9 people earn 30,000 kr and 1 person earns 1,000,000 kr, the mean salary is 127,000 kr — not representative of most people's experience. Median (30,000 kr) would be more meaningful.
