Simplify ratios and find equivalent ratios

About this calculator

A ratio compares two quantities. The ratio 15:25 simplifies to 3:5 by dividing both by their GCF (5). Ratios are used in recipes (2:1 flour to butter), maps (1:50,000 scale), financial analysis (debt-to-equity), and mixing (concrete, paint, chemicals). A ratio a:b means for every a of the first, there are b of the second.

How to use

Ratio 15:25 — GCF is 5, simplified to 3:5. As a decimal: 0.6:1. In a recipe scaled to 3:5 ratio: if you use 300g of ingredient A, you need 500g of ingredient B.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a ratio and a fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole (3/4 means 3 parts out of 4). A ratio compares two separate quantities (3:4 means 3 of one thing for every 4 of another). In calculations they behave the same way, but the interpretation differs.

Can ratios have more than two terms?

Yes. A 1:2:3 ratio has three terms. For example, mixing concrete with 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 3 parts gravel. This calculator handles two-term ratios.
