Bar and psi both measure pressure: force per unit area. The conversion uses fixed factors, so it is exact to the number of digits shown.
The factors
NIST lists 1 pound-force per square inch (psi) as 6.894757 kPa, and 1 bar is defined as exactly 100 kPa. So: • 1 psi = 0.0689476 bar, and bar = psi × 0.0689476 • 1 bar = 14.5038 psi, and psi = bar × 14.5038
32 psi × 0.0689476 = 2.21 bar. 2.5 bar × 14.5038 = 36.26 psi.
Gauge and absolute pressure
Tire gauges, compressors and most workshop gauges read pressure above the surrounding air (gauge pressure, sometimes written psig or barg). Absolute pressure adds the atmosphere, about 14.7 psi or 1.013 bar at sea level. Convert like with like: a gauge reading converts to a gauge reading.
Other units you may see
1 bar = 100 kPa, so a door-jamb label of 230 kPa is 2.3 bar or about 33 psi. NIST notes that the bar is accepted in the US only for limited uses such as meteorology, which is why US labels use psi and kPa while European manuals often use bar.

How to use
Choose the direction and enter the pressure. The default converts 32 psi, a common car tire pressure, to 2.21 bar. For a European spec such as 2.4 bar, switch to bar → PSI to get 34.81 psi. Always set tire pressure to the figure on your vehicle's door-jamb label, measured when the tires are cold.
Frequently asked questions
How many psi is 1 bar?
1 bar is 14.5038 psi. Multiply a pressure in bar by 14.5038 to get psi; for example, 2.2 bar is 31.91 psi.
How do I convert psi to bar?
Multiply psi by 0.0689476. 35 psi × 0.0689476 = 2.41 bar. Dividing by 14.5038 gives the same answer.
Is bar the same as atmospheric pressure?
Close but not equal. 1 bar is exactly 100 kPa, while standard atmospheric pressure is 101.325 kPa, or 1.01325 bar (14.696 psi).
Is tire pressure gauge or absolute?
Gauge. A tire at 32 psi holds 32 psi more than the surrounding air, about 46.7 psi absolute at sea level. Converters like this one work the same for either, as long as you do not mix them.
