Pressure = force per unit area. 1 bar is defined as exactly 100 000 pascals (100 kPa), close to but not exactly the standard atmospheric pressure (which is 101 325 Pa = 1.01325 bar). 1 PSI = 1 pound-force per square inch = 6 894.76 Pa. Conversion: 1 bar = 14.5038 PSI, 1 PSI = 0.0689476 bar.
Bar is the mainstream European industrial pressure unit; PSI is standard in the US. kPa and MPa are the pure SI units (used in scientific literature and Japanese vehicle specs). ATM (standard atmospheres) is 1.01325 bar and appears in chemistry contexts. All these units are gauge pressures by convention unless labeled absolute — a tire "at 32 PSI" is 32 PSI above ambient atmospheric, not 32 PSI absolute.

Standard workshop compressed-air pressure. Most pneumatic tools spec 90–100 PSI (6.2–6.9 bar) for full-rated performance.

Is this the same as the tire-pressure calculator?
The tire calculator at /en/calculators/automotive/tire-pressure/ is a single-direction PSI → bar converter aimed at motorists. This one is bidirectional and general-purpose (hydraulics, compressed air, industrial). The math is identical; the framing differs.
Is bar the same as atm?
Almost. 1 bar = 100 000 Pa exactly. 1 atm = 101 325 Pa (standard atmospheric pressure at sea level). So 1 bar = 0.9869 atm — close enough that they are often used interchangeably in casual conversation. Scientific and engineering work distinguishes them.
What is kPa and how does it relate?
1 kPa = 1000 pascals. 1 bar = 100 kPa. So 32 PSI ≈ 2.21 bar ≈ 221 kPa. Japanese and Korean tire pressure labels often use kPa. Some European bike pumps show all three (PSI, bar, kPa) on one gauge.
Is tire pressure PSI gauge or absolute?
Gauge. A tire pressure gauge reads zero at atmospheric pressure. "32 PSI" on a tire means 32 PSI above ambient, so about 46.7 PSI absolute. This convention is universal for tires, air compressors, and most engineering pressure references. Scientific labs sometimes use absolute (PSIa) explicitly.
