About this calculator
The number of days until a date is the difference between the two calendar dates, counted at midnight so that the time of day does not matter: days = (target date − start date) in whole days. From October 23, 2026 to December 25, 2026 that is 8 days left in October, 30 in November and 25 in December, 63 days. The start date defaults to today in your own time zone and the end date is not counted as a day (the day before Christmas shows 1, Christmas Day shows 0), which is how most people count sleeps. A date in the past gives a negative number: the days since that date.
Holidays are worked out from their rules rather than typed in, so they stay right every year:
• Fixed dates: New Year's Day (January 1), Valentine's Day (February 14), St. Patrick's Day (March 17), Independence Day (July 4), Halloween (October 31), Christmas Eve and Day (December 24 and 25), New Year's Eve (December 31). • Weekday rules (US): Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May, Memorial Day the last Monday in May, Father's Day the third Sunday in June, Labor Day the first Monday in September, Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November, and Black Friday the day after. • Easter Sunday follows the Gregorian computus (the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm), which places it on the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21; in 2026 it is April 5, in 2027 March 28, in 2028 April 16.
When a holiday is chosen, the calculator finds its date in the start year and, if that has already passed, in the next year, so it always counts to the next occurrence. Observed holidays (a Monday off when July 4 falls on a weekend) are not applied here; the business days calculator handles those for working-day counts.
The tiles break the count into whole weeks and days, total hours (days × 24), decimal weeks, months on the 30.44-day average, and the number of weekends between the two dates. Leap days are included automatically because the arithmetic uses real calendar dates.

How to use
Type the date you are counting down to, or pick a holiday from the list, and leave the start date blank to count from today. Example 1: from October 23, 2026 to December 25, 2026 (enter 2026-10-23 as the start date to reproduce it): 63 days, which is 9 weeks exactly, 1,512 hours, 2.07 months, with 9 weekends in between. Example 2: Thanksgiving from the same day. The fourth Thursday of November 2026 is November 26: 34 days. Example 3: Easter from October 23, 2026. Easter 2026 (April 5) has passed, so the calculator uses Easter 2027, March 28: 156 days. Example 4: a wedding on 2027-06-12 from 2026-10-23: 232 days, 33 weeks and 1 day. Example 5: a past date, 2026-01-01, from 2026-10-23 gives −295: that many days ago.
Frequently asked questions
How many days until Christmas?
Pick "Christmas Day" and leave the start date blank: the calculator counts from today to the next December 25. On December 24 it shows 1 day, on Christmas Day 0, and on December 26 it starts counting to the following year, 364 days (365 across a leap year).
Does the countdown include today and the target date?
It counts the nights between the two dates: today is day 0 and the target date is not added as an extra day, so from a Monday to the next Monday is 7. If you want to count both ends inclusively, add 1.
How is Easter calculated?
With the Gregorian computus, the algorithm churches use to set Easter as the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. It can fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25. Orthodox Easter uses the Julian calendar and usually falls later; it is not included here.
Which Thanksgiving does the calculator use?
The US Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday in November (November 26 in 2026, November 25 in 2027). Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October; enter its date directly for that.
Can I count the days between two specific dates?
Yes: enter the earlier date in the "count from" box and the later one as the target. For a count that excludes weekends and US federal holidays, use the business days calculator; for a result in years, months and days, the day counter.
Why does a date in the past give a negative number?
The calculator subtracts the start date from the target, so a target before the start is negative: −295 means the date was 295 days ago. Swap the two dates if you want it positive.
