About this calculator
A business day (working day) is a weekday that is not a public holiday. In "between" mode the calculator walks from the start date to the end date one day at a time and counts every day that is not a Saturday, a Sunday or, with holidays switched on, a US federal holiday. By default the count runs from the start date to the end date inclusive; choose "No" to stop before the end date, which is the convention for "N business days to respond" clauses where the day of receipt is not counted. In "N days from" mode it steps forward (or backward for a negative number) until that many business days have passed and reports the date reached and its weekday.
Holidays are computed by rule, not looked up, so any year works. The eleven federal holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103 are New Year's Day (Jan 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday in January), Washington's Birthday (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth (June 19, from 2021), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (first Monday in September), Columbus Day (second Monday in October), Veterans Day (Nov 11), Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas (Dec 25). A fixed-date holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after, as the Office of Personnel Management schedules them. Inauguration Day (DC area only) is not included.
Stock exchanges, banks, courts and other countries use different calendars: the NYSE closes on Good Friday but not on Columbus Day or Veterans Day, UK bank holidays include Easter Monday, and state holidays vary. For those, pick "weekends only" and subtract the extra closures by hand. The day counter at /en/calculators/time-zones/day-counter/ counts calendar days.

How to use
Pick what to work out, enter the start date (and the end date or the number of business days), and say whether federal holidays should be skipped and whether the end date counts. Example (the defaults): working days in 2026. From 2026-01-01 to 2026-12-31 inclusive there are 365 calendar days, 104 of them Saturdays or Sundays, leaving 261 weekdays. All eleven federal holidays are observed on weekdays in 2026 (Independence Day falls on a Saturday and is observed on Friday July 3), so 261 − 11 = 250 business days. With "weekends only" the answer is 261. Example: 10 business days from 2026-01-01. Stepping forward from New Year's Day: January 2 is day 1, January 5 to 9 are days 2 to 6, January 12 to 15 are days 7 to 10, so the date reached is Thursday 2026-01-15. Example: business days left before Christmas. From 2026-10-23 up to but not including 2026-12-25: 63 calendar days, 18 weekend days and 2 weekday holidays (Veterans Day on November 11 and Thanksgiving on November 26; Christmas Day is the excluded end date) leave 43 business days.
Frequently asked questions
How many business days are there in 2026?
250 if the eleven US federal holidays are skipped, 261 counting weekdays only. 2026 has 365 days, 104 of them on weekends, and every federal holiday is observed on a weekday that year (July 4 falls on a Saturday and is observed on Friday July 3).
Does the count include the start and end dates?
The start date is always counted if it is a business day. The end date is counted by default; switch "count the end date" to "No" for the convention used by most deadline clauses, where the day something is received is day zero.
Which holidays are skipped?
The eleven US federal holidays listed in 5 U.S.C. 6103, on their observed dates (a Saturday holiday moves to Friday, a Sunday holiday to Monday). Juneteenth is included from 2021, the year it became a federal holiday. State holidays, Good Friday and stock-exchange closures are not; choose "weekends only" and adjust by hand for those.
How do I count business days for a legal deadline?
Check the rule first. Under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 6, for instance, the day of the event is excluded, every day including weekends and holidays is then counted for periods stated in days, and a last day that falls on a weekend or holiday rolls to the next business day. For a period stated in business days, use this calculator with "count the end date" set to No and add the clause's own holiday list.
What is the date 10 business days from today?
Enter today as the start date, choose "the date N business days from the start date" and enter 10. Ten business days is two calendar weeks when no holiday falls in between; each weekday holiday in the way pushes the date one day further.
Why is the result negative?
The end date is before the start date. The calculator counts the days between them anyway and reports the count as negative; swap the dates for a positive number.
