About this calculator
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60. There are 60 minutes in an hour, so each minute is 1/60 = 0.0167 of an hour: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes 0.50, 45 minutes 0.75 and 20 minutes 0.33. Payroll systems and invoices use decimal hours because they multiply directly by an hourly rate: 7 h 45 min at $20 is 7.75 × $20 = $155, whereas "7.45 × 20" would be wrong by $6.
Going back, hours and minutes = whole hours, then the fraction × 60: 7.75 → 7 h and 0.75 × 60 = 45 min.
Rounding. Time clocks often round each punch or each day's total. US regulation 29 CFR 785.48 accepts rounding to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth of an hour (6 minutes) or quarter hour (15 minutes), as long as over time it does not short the employee. The rounding option applies that to the converted figure: 7 h 45 min is 7.75 exactly, 7.8 to the nearest tenth and 7.75 to the nearest quarter hour.
The chart below lists every minute from 1 to 60 as decimal hours to two places, the form most payroll conversion charts use (the exact values repeat: 1 minute is 0.01666…, printed as 0.02). How to use
Choose the direction, enter the hours and minutes (or the decimal hours), and pick how to round. Example (the defaults): 7 hours 45 minutes. 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7 h 45 min = 7.75 decimal hours; as total minutes, 7 × 60 + 45 = 465. Example: 38 hours 20 minutes on a weekly time sheet. 20 ÷ 60 = 0.333…, so 38.33 hours; at $18.50 an hour that is 38.33 × $18.50 = $709.11, and with the exact 38.333… hours $709.17. The six cents are why payroll systems keep more decimals or work in whole minutes (2,300 minutes × $18.50 ÷ 60 = $709.17). Example the other way: 6.4 decimal hours. 0.4 × 60 = 24, so 6 h 24 min (6:24). Note that 6.4 is not 6 hours 40 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
What is 45 minutes in decimal hours?
0.75 hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. Likewise 15 minutes = 0.25, 30 minutes = 0.50, 20 minutes = 0.33 and 10 minutes = 0.17.
Is 7.45 hours the same as 7 hours 45 minutes?
No. 7.45 decimal hours is 7 hours and 0.45 × 60 = 27 minutes. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 decimal hours. Mixing the two is the most common time-sheet error, and at $20 an hour it is worth $6 per day.
Why does the chart show 1 minute as 0.02?
Because 1 ÷ 60 = 0.01666…, which rounds to 0.02 at two decimals. Payroll conversion charts print two decimals, so a few minutes round up and a few down; the converter above keeps the exact value in its "exact" tile.
Can an employer round my hours to the nearest quarter hour?
In the US, yes: 29 CFR 785.48 permits rounding to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth or quarter of an hour if the practice is neutral over time. Under quarter-hour rounding, 7:52 to 8:07 becomes 8:00 and 8:08 to 8:22 becomes 8:15.
How do I convert decimal hours to minutes?
Multiply by 60. 2.3 hours = 138 minutes; 0.1 hour = 6 minutes; 1.25 hours = 75 minutes. To get hours and minutes, keep the whole hours and multiply only the fraction: 2.3 h → 2 h and 0.3 × 60 = 18 min.
