About this calculator

A chat subscription is a flat monthly fee with usage limits; the API bills every token. For the same usage:

API cost per month = messages per day × days × (input tokens × input price + output tokens × output price) ÷ 1,000,000 break-even messages per day = subscription ÷ (days × API cost per message)

Below the break-even the API is cheaper; above it the subscription is. As of October 2026, ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month (OpenAI Help Center) and Claude Pro is $20 a month billed monthly or $17 a month billed annually (Anthropic); higher tiers such as Claude Max start at $100.

In a chat, each new message resends the conversation so far, so input tokens per message grow as a conversation goes on; long conversations, file uploads and reasoning models raise the per-message cost quickly. Not everything is a cost comparison: subscriptions bundle apps, file handling, web search, image tools and memory, and they cap usage; the API bills every token without plan caps (within rate limits) but needs your own interface or a third-party client. API prices are standard list prices as of October 2026.

How to use

Enter the subscription price, how many messages you send a day and on how many days, the typical length of what is sent (including earlier turns) and of each reply, and the API model you would use instead. Example (the defaults): $20 subscription, 30 messages a day for 30 days, 2,000 input and 500 output tokens, GPT-6.1 Sol ($2 / $10). Per message: (2,000 × 2 + 500 × 10) ÷ 1M = $0.009. Monthly API: 900 × $0.009 = $8.10, so the API is $11.90 a month cheaper. Break-even: $20 ÷ (30 × $0.009) = 74 messages a day. Example 2: the same usage on Claude Opus 5.5 ($4 / $20): $0.018 per message, $16.20 a month; break-even 37 messages a day. Example 3: a heavy user sending 100 messages a day of 8,000 input and 1,000 output tokens on GPT-6.1 Sol: $0.026 per message, $78.00 a month, well above a $20 plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Plus cheaper than the API?

For light use, the API is usually cheaper: at GPT-6.1 Sol prices a 2,000-token prompt with a 500-token reply costs about $0.009, so $20 buys roughly 2,200 such messages a month. Heavy users, long conversations and large file uploads tip the balance toward the subscription, which also includes the ChatGPT apps and tools.

What does Claude Pro cost compared with the Claude API?

Claude Pro is $20 a month billed monthly ($17 a month billed annually) as of October 2026. At Claude Sonnet 5.5 prices ($2 / $10 per million tokens) the same $20 buys about 2,200 API messages of 2,000 input and 500 output tokens, before counting Claude’s higher tokens per word.

Why does a long chat cost more per message on the API?

The API is stateless: every request sends the whole conversation again, so the 20th message in a thread carries the previous 19 as input tokens. Prompt caching reduces the price of that repeated history.

How current are the prices?

They are the standard list prices on the OpenAI, Anthropic and Google pricing pages as of October 2026 (checked 17 October 2026), before taxes, volume discounts or regional surcharges. Google has announced increases for Gemini 4 Argon (from December 1, 2026) and Gemini 3.8 Flash (from January 1, 2027); both prices are in the list. Providers change prices often, so confirm on the official pricing page before you commit a budget.
