Step-count-to-distance conversion needs stride length. The simplest personalized estimate is height × a gait factor: 0.413 for adult women walking, 0.415 for adult men walking, 0.6 for jogging, 0.75 for running (Sportline/ACSM). Distance = steps × stride_inches / 63 360 (inches per mile).
More precise stride comes from measuring: walk 20 marked feet and count steps, then stride = 240 in / step_count. A well-fit smartwatch measures stride via accelerometer and GPS calibration; that will beat the height-based formula for you specifically.
Step counts vary by gait: 2 000 steps ≈ 1 mile at walking pace for an average adult, but running at the same height yields fewer steps per mile because stride lengthens (about 1 500 steps/mile for jogging, 1 200 for running). The Tudor-Locke et al. adult step count classification (sedentary <5 000, active 10 000+, highly-active 12 500+) remains the standard reference.
How to use
Example — 10 000 walking steps for a 68-in-tall woman. Stride = 68 × 0.413 = 28.08 in. Distance = 10 000 × 28.08 / 63 360 = 4.43 miles. Example — 10 000 running steps for a 70-in-tall man. Stride = 70 × 0.75 = 52.5 in. Distance = 10 000 × 52.5 / 63 360 = 8.29 miles. Running steps cover almost twice the distance of walking steps at the same count.

Why does my Fitbit disagree with this calculator?
Devices auto-calibrate stride from measured motion + GPS distance data over time. If your device shows a shorter distance for the same steps, it has learned that your true stride is shorter than the height × 0.413 heuristic. Trust the device once it has run for a week with GPS.
How many steps equal one mile?
About 2 000 steps for walking, 1 500 for jogging, 1 200 for running (average adult). The exact number depends on your height and gait — a 6-foot man running fast may take just 1 000 steps per mile; a 5-foot woman walking may take 2 500.
Are 10 000 steps a magic number?
No. The 10 000 target came from a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign ("Manpo-kei" — 10 000 step meter), not from research. Meta-analyses now show most of the mortality benefit accrues by 7 000–8 000 steps/day, with modest additional benefit up to about 10 000.
Can I compute walking distance without a stride estimate?
Yes — use pace × time. At a 3 mph walking pace for 60 minutes, you cover 3 miles. This avoids stride entirely if you time your walk and know a consistent pace.
