Attack Speed Converter (Attacks per Second, Interval, APM)

Convert between attacks per second, the attack interval in seconds and attacks per minute, and apply a percentage attack-speed bonus, so you can read any game's stat sheet the same way and feed the DPS calculator the right rate.

About this calculator

Games quote attack speed three ways. Action RPGs and MOBAs show attacks per second (1.5 means an attack every 0.667 s); many MMOs and strategy games show the attack interval or weapon speed in seconds (a 2.0 speed weapon swings every 2 s, 0.5 attacks per second); shooters and rhythm-style games count per minute (RPM, APM). They all describe one rate, and the conversions are attacks per second = 1 ÷ interval = per minute ÷ 60.

Attack speed bonuses

"+20% increased attack speed" means the rate is multiplied by 1.2, so the interval is divided by 1.2, not reduced by 20%: a 1.5 attacks-per-second weapon becomes 1.8, and its interval drops from 0.667 s to 0.556 s, a 16.7% shorter wait. Bonuses from several sources are usually added together before being applied once (two 20% bonuses give 1.4×, not 1.44×), which is the Path of Exile and Diablo convention; a few games multiply separate sources, and most cap the total (Diablo IV, for instance, has two 100% caps). Enter the summed bonus your game shows.

Why convert

DPS is damage per hit × attacks per second, so a stat sheet in intervals has to be converted before the DPS calculator makes sense, and an attack-speed bonus is worth exactly as much DPS as the same percentage of damage. The attacks-in-10-seconds tile shows the practical effect: because attacks come in whole numbers, a bonus only helps once it fits an extra attack into the window you care about, which is what players call a breakpoint. Animation and server tick rates round the interval to a frame or tick in some games, which creates further breakpoints the converter cannot see.

How to use

Example: a weapon with 1.5 attacks per second and 20% increased attack speed. Attacks per second = 1.5 × 1.2 = 1.8; attack interval = 1 ÷ 1.8 = 0.5556 s; attacks per minute = 1.8 × 60 = 108. Those are the defaults. Example 2: a 2.0-second weapon in an MMO with no bonus is 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 attacks per second, 30 per minute; with 10% haste it is 0.55 per second and the swing takes 1.818 s. Example 3: a 600 RPM weapon is 10 attacks per second, an interval of 0.1 s.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert attack interval to attacks per second?

Divide 1 by the interval. A 0.8-second attack is 1 ÷ 0.8 = 1.25 attacks per second; a 2.5-second attack is 0.4. Going the other way, attacks per second = 1 ÷ interval too, so 1.5 attacks per second is an interval of 0.667 s.

Does 20% attack speed mean 20% shorter attacks?

No. It multiplies the rate by 1.2, so the interval is divided by 1.2 and gets 16.7% shorter. 100% increased attack speed doubles the rate and halves the interval (a 50% cut). The time-saved tile shows the exact change in seconds.

Do attack speed bonuses stack additively or multiplicatively?

Most games add all "increased attack speed" percentages together and apply the sum once: 20% + 30% = 1.5× rate. Some have a separate "more attack speed" class that multiplies (Path of Exile), and many cap the total (Diablo IV caps bonus attack speed in two 100% tiers). Enter the summed figure shown on your character sheet, or the product if your game multiplies.

Is attack speed as good as damage for DPS?

Percentage for percentage, yes: DPS = damage × attacks per second, so +20% attack speed and +20% damage both give +20% DPS. Attack speed also speeds up on-hit effects and resource generation but costs more mana or stamina per second, and it runs into animation or tick breakpoints, so the real gain can be slightly less than the arithmetic.

What is an attack-speed breakpoint?

A rate at which one more attack fits into a fixed window: a buff duration, a boss phase, an animation frame budget. Between breakpoints extra attack speed changes nothing in that window. The attacks-in-10-seconds tile shows the whole-attack count for a 10-second window; change the bonus to see where the count steps up.
