About this calculator
Pixels = paper size in inches × resolution in pixels per inch (PPI). Printers often call this DPI, and for this purpose the two terms are used interchangeably.
ISO 216 A sizes are defined in millimetres, so they are converted first (1 in = 25.4 mm):
A4 width = 210 mm ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 2480.3 → 2480 px A4 height = 297 mm ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 3507.9 → 3508 px
Results are rounded to whole pixels and shown in portrait orientation; swap the numbers for landscape.
A sizes at 300 PPI: A3 3508 × 4961, A4 2480 × 3508, A5 1748 × 2480, A6 1240 × 1748. US Letter at 300 PPI is 2550 × 3300.
Which resolution? 300 PPI is the usual target for photos and print documents viewed up close; 150 PPI is fine for posters seen from a distance; 72 or 96 PPI is only a screen convention and is not a meaningful print setting. The megapixel figure tells you how large a camera file needs to be to fill the page at that resolution without upscaling.
How to use
Pick the paper size and enter the resolution. Example (the defaults): A4 at 300 PPI is 2480 × 3508 px, 8.7 megapixels, so any camera of 9 MP or more can fill an A4 page at photo quality. Example 2: a 4 × 6 in photo print at 300 PPI is 1200 × 1800 px (2.2 MP). Example 3: US Letter at 150 PPI, for a flyer that will be seen at arm's length or more, is 1275 × 1650 px.
Frequently asked questions
How many pixels is A4 at 300 DPI?
2480 × 3508 pixels in portrait (3508 × 2480 in landscape). At 150 DPI it is 1240 × 1754, and at 72 DPI 595 × 842, which is also the size of an A4 page in PDF points.
Is DPI the same as PPI?
Strictly, PPI is pixels per inch in the image file and DPI is ink dots per inch laid down by the printer, which can be much higher. In print-size settings and in everyday use ("export at 300 DPI") they mean the same thing: how many image pixels go into each inch of paper.
How do I set up an A4 document in Photoshop, Canva or GIMP?
Create a canvas of 2480 × 3508 px and set the resolution to 300 PPI. If the design will be professionally printed with a bleed, add the bleed to each edge (3 mm is common, about 35 px per edge at 300 PPI) and keep text inside a safe margin.
