About this calculator
In the US system, men's and women's shoes are built on the same length scale but numbered differently: for the same foot, the women's size is 1.5 higher than the men's size. A men's 8 is a women's 9.5, a women's 7 is a men's 5.5. The gap exists because the two scales were anchored at different points when they were standardised, not because women's feet are shaped differently (although women's lasts are usually narrower at the heel).
Formula: women's size = men's size + gap; men's size = women's size − gap. The result is rounded to the nearest half size.
The 1.5-size gap is what most US sneaker and running brands print on their charts (Nike, for example, lists men's 8 beside women's 9.5). A few brands use a 1-size gap, usually brands that size from European lasts and then relabel, and some older charts or work-boot brands use 2. If a brand's chart shows both men's and women's columns, read the gap off it and pick the matching option; if it only lists one gender, 1.5 is the safe default.
The tiles under the result give the UK, EU and foot-length equivalents of the same foot, worked out from the barleycorn (⅓ inch) step of the US and UK scales and the ⅔ cm step of EU sizes, anchored at US men's 9 = UK 8 = EU 42 = 27 cm. UK sizes have no gender gap: a UK 7 is a UK 7 for everyone, which is one reason UK brands sometimes confuse US shoppers.
Width is the other half of the story. A men's shoe in the converted size is typically a D width, which is a wide (W) in women's sizing, and a women's B width is a narrow in men's. Someone with a narrow foot who switches to men's sizing may want to look for a B or narrow fitting.

How to use
Enter the size you know, choose which way to convert, and leave the gap at 1.5 unless the brand's chart shows otherwise. Example 1 (defaults): men's 8 → women's 8 + 1.5 = 9.5 (UK 7, EU 40.5, 26.2 cm). Example 2: women's 10 → men's 10 − 1.5 = 8.5 (UK 7.5, EU 41.5, 26.6 cm). Example 3: a brand with a 1-size gap, women's 7 → men's 6. Example 4: women's 2 with the standard gap is men's 0.5, below the men's range; youth sizes continue downward (youth 1Y = men's 1), so look at a youth 1Y or 13 in kids.
Frequently asked questions
Is a men's 8 a women's 9.5 or 10?
With the standard US gap it is a 9.5. Brands that use a 2-size gap would call it a 10, but those are the minority; check the brand's chart if the shoe is unisex.
Why do UK sizes have no men/women gap?
The UK scale numbers shoes by last length from one starting point for everyone, so a UK 6 is the same length whether it is sold as a men's or a women's shoe. The US women's scale was set 1.5 numbers above the men's scale, which created the gap.
Does the conversion also work for EU sizes?
EU sizes are unisex like UK sizes: a women's EU 39 and a men's EU 39 are the same length. So to go from a US women's size to EU, first convert to men's (subtract 1.5), then to EU; the EU tile does this for you.
Can a woman wear men's running shoes in the converted size?
Yes, if the width works: men's shoes are built wider across the ball and heel. A women's B-width foot may slip at the heel in a men's D-width shoe; some brands offer men's shoes in a narrow (B) width, and women's shoes in wide (D) widths, which closes the gap either way.
What about kids and youth sizes?
Youth sizes 1Y to 7Y are the same lengths as men's 1 to 7, so a youth 5Y equals a men's 5 and a women's 6.5. That is why many women with small feet buy youth sizes: a women's 7.5 is a youth 6Y.
