About this calculator
US women's pant sizes (0, 2, 4 … 20) are not measurements; they are labels tied to a table of body measurements. This calculator uses the misses table from ASTM D5585, the US standard that most pattern makers and many retailers base their charts on: size 8 is a 28-inch waist and 38.5-inch hips, and each size up adds one inch to both until size 10, then 1.5 inches.
Method: your waist is matched to the nearest waist in the table, your hips to the nearest hips, and the larger of the two sizes is the answer, because a pant that fits the larger measurement can be taken in at the smaller one but not the other way around. Both intermediate sizes appear in the tiles, so you can see whether the waist or the hips decided.
Conversions: UK and Australian sizes are the US size plus 4 (US 8 = UK 12), and EU sizes are the US size plus 32 (US 8 = EU 40). Jeans and many casual pants are sized by waist in inches instead (a "W28"), and that number is simply your waist measurement rounded; the matching inseam (L) is your inside-leg length.
Measure the natural waist (the narrowest point, usually just above the navel, where the body bends sideways) and the hips at the fullest part of the seat, with the tape level and snug but not tight, over underwear or thin clothing. For low-rise pants, retailers sometimes quote a waist taken where the waistband sits, a few inches lower, which is larger than the natural waist.
Limits: the table covers misses sizes 0 to 20 (waist 24 to 37.5 in). Plus sizes (14W to 32W) use a separate table with a different waist-to-hip ratio, petite and tall are length variations of the same sizes, and junior sizes (odd numbers 1, 3, 5) run smaller and straighter. Brands also "vanity size" up to two sizes below the standard, so treat the result as the standard size and check the brand's own chart.

How to use
Enter your natural waist and your hip measurement, choose inches or centimetres, and pick the size system you want. Example 1 (defaults): waist 28 in, hips 38.5 in. Waist 28 → size 8; hips 38.5 → size 8. Result: US 8 (UK 12, EU 40, jeans W28). Example 2: waist 30 in, hips 42 in. Waist 30 is nearest 30.5 → size 12; hips 42 is nearest 42.5 → size 14. The larger wins: US 14 (UK 18, EU 46), and the waist may need taking in. Example 3 (metric): waist 66 cm, hips 92 cm. 66 ÷ 2.54 = 26.0 in → size 4; 92 ÷ 2.54 = 36.2 in → nearest 36.5 → size 4. Result: US 4 (UK 8, EU 36, W26).
Frequently asked questions
What size is a 28-inch waist in women's pants?
In the ASTM misses table a 28-inch waist is a size 8 (UK 12, EU 40) when the hips are about 38.5 inches. In jeans sizing it is simply a W28. If your hips are 41 inches or more, the hips push the size up to 12 or 14 and the waist can be altered.
Why does my size differ between brands?
Brands cut to their own fit models and many use vanity sizing, labelling a standard 10 as an 8 or a 6. Premium and European brands tend to stay closer to the standard. The calculator gives the ASTM standard size; compare it with the brand's chart in inches or centimetres rather than trusting the label.
How do I convert a US size to UK or EU?
Add 4 for the UK and Australia (US 8 = UK 12), add 32 for most of Europe (US 8 = EU 40). Italy runs about 4 above EU (EU 40 = IT 44) and France 2 above (FR 42), though charts vary.
Where exactly do I measure the waist and hips?
The natural waist is the narrowest part of the torso, usually an inch or two above the navel; bend sideways and the crease marks it. The hips are the fullest part of the seat, often 7 to 9 inches below the waist, with feet together. Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor.
What about plus, petite and junior sizes?
Plus sizes (14W to 32W) come from a separate table with a fuller waist for a given hip, so a 44-inch hip is a 16 in misses but may be a 14W in plus. Petite and tall change the rise and inseam, not the waist or hips. Junior sizes (odd numbers) are cut for a straighter, less curvy figure and run about one size smaller than the even misses number.
