This calculator uses a per-mile burn rate set directly by the aircraft model you select: 4.5 gal/mile for a Boeing 737, 5.8 for an Airbus A320, 8.2 for a Boeing 777, and 12.5 for a Boeing 747. Load factor (the percentage of seats filled) affects efficiency: a lightly loaded aircraft burns slightly more fuel per seat-mile. The formula is: Fuel Cost = distance × burnRate × fuelPrice × (1 + (100 − loadFactor) / 500). The load factor adjustment term means a 50% load factor adds a 10% fuel cost penalty compared to a full aircraft. This reflects the real-world relationship between payload efficiency and fuel economics.

How to use

Assume an Airbus A320 flying 500 miles, fuel priced at $6.00 per gallon, and a load factor of 80%. The burn rate for an A320 is 5.8 gallons/mile. Plug into the formula: Fuel Cost = 500 × 5.8 × 6.00 × (1 + (100 − 80) / 500) = 500 × 5.8 × 6.00 × (1 + 0.04) = 500 × 5.8 × 6.00 × 1.04 = 17,400 × 1.04 = $18,096. So a 500-mile A320 flight at 80% load with $6/gal fuel costs approximately $18,096 in fuel.
