Anxiety Level Assessment Calculator

Estimates your anxiety level by combining GAD-7 symptom scores with lifestyle factors like caffeine intake and sleep. Use it to get a snapshot of your anxiety burden and spot areas for improvement.

About this calculator

This calculator blends two validated anxiety signals: self-reported GAD-7 symptom ratings and quantifiable lifestyle factors. The core formula is: Score = worry_frequency + control_worry + restless_feeling + max(0, (caffeine_intake − 400) / 100) + max(0, (7 − sleep_hours) × 0.5). The first three terms are direct GAD-7 item scores (typically 0–3 each). The caffeine term adds a penalty only when daily intake exceeds 400 mg — the generally recognized safe threshold — scaled per 100 mg over that limit. The sleep term adds a penalty for each hour of sleep below the recommended 7 hours, scaled by 0.5. Higher total scores indicate a greater combined anxiety burden. This tool is educational and does not replace a clinical diagnosis.

How to use

Suppose you rate your nervousness at 2, inability to control worry at 2, and restlessness at 1. You drink 500 mg of caffeine daily and average 6 hours of sleep. Step 1 — symptom sum: 2 + 2 + 1 = 5. Step 2 — caffeine penalty: max(0, (500 − 400) / 100) = max(0, 1) = 1. Step 3 — sleep penalty: max(0, (7 − 6) × 0.5) = max(0, 0.5) = 0.5. Step 4 — total score: 5 + 1 + 0.5 = 6.5. A score in this range suggests moderate anxiety worsened by lifestyle factors. Reducing caffeine and improving sleep could meaningfully lower your score.

Frequently asked questions

How is anxiety level calculated using the GAD-7 questionnaire?

The GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale) asks you to rate specific symptoms on a 0–3 frequency scale. This calculator uses three of those items — nervousness, uncontrollable worry, and restlessness — as its clinical base. Scores of 0–4 are generally considered minimal anxiety, 5–9 mild, 10–14 moderate, and 15+ severe. Adding lifestyle penalties on top provides a more complete picture of your daily burden.

Why does caffeine intake affect my anxiety score?

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that can amplify anxiety symptoms, particularly at high doses. Health authorities like the FDA consider up to 400 mg per day safe for most adults. This calculator applies a penalty only above that threshold, adding 1 point per extra 100 mg consumed. If you notice your score rising due to caffeine, cutting back or switching to lower-caffeine alternatives may help.

How does sleep deprivation increase my anxiety level score?

Chronic sleep loss dysregulates the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, two brain regions central to anxiety regulation. The formula penalizes every hour of sleep below 7 hours by 0.5 points, reflecting the dose-response relationship between sleep debt and anxiety symptoms. Getting even one extra hour of sleep can reduce your score by 0.5. Most adults need 7–9 hours nightly for optimal mental health.
