This gives the monthly diverted weight. Multiplying by the timeframe scales it to the full projection period in months. Finally, multiplying by the landfill cost (in $/ton) converts diverted weight into avoided disposal cost. Note that since waste is in lbs and cost is in $/ton, you may need to divide by 2,000 to convert lbs to tons for a dollar figure. The result quantifies both the environmental benefit (mass diverted) and the economic benefit (cost avoided).
