Simple travel time (distance ÷ speed) ignores stops, traffic, and road type — this calculator corrects all three. The formula is: Total Time = (distance / (averageSpeed × trafficFactor)) + ((distance / 100) × (stopTime / 60)) + roadTypePenalty. The first term is drive time adjusted downward by a trafficFactor (e.g., 0.80 for heavy traffic means effective speed is 80% of averageSpeed). The second term adds stop time, scaled by how many 100-mile segments the trip contains. The third term adds a road-type penalty: 0 for pure highway, distance × 0.01 hours for rural roads, and distance × 0.02 hours for urban/surface streets, reflecting the extra time lost to intersections and lower speed limits. Together these three terms produce a much more realistic estimate than a back-of-envelope calculation.
