About this calculator
Weight Watchers has run several generations of point systems since 1997 (Points, PointsPlus, SmartPoints, myWW+, Personal Points). SmartPoints (2015–2020) is the version most people remember by name; it weighted calories, saturated fat, and sugar upward (penalizing) and protein downward (rewarding), which pushes the eater toward lower-calorie, higher-protein, lower-sugar foods.
The classic SmartPoints formula is approximately: SP = round(calories/33 + saturatedFat/9 + sugar/9 − protein/10). WW never fully published the coefficients, but reverse-engineered versions from consumer reports and independent analyses converge on this form. Values are clamped to 0 (no negative points).
Weight Watchers has moved past pure SmartPoints. The current Personal Points system (2021+) customizes the coefficients based on the member's food preferences and dietary needs; a 'zero-point' list of vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins is also personalized. For an exact number matching the WW app, consult the official WW resources; this calculator is a useful estimate that stays true to the underlying calorie/quality-of-food idea.
How to use
Example — a Greek-yogurt cup. Calories = 250, saturated fat = 3 g, sugar = 5 g, protein = 10 g. Calories/33 = 7.58; satFat/9 = 0.33; sugar/9 = 0.56; protein/10 = 1.00. Sum: 7.58 + 0.33 + 0.56 − 1.00 = 7.47. Round = 7 SmartPoints. Example — a lean chicken breast (6 oz, 165 cal, 0 g sat fat, 0 g sugar, 31 g protein). Calories/33 = 5.00; satFat/9 = 0; sugar/9 = 0; protein/10 = 3.10. Sum: 5.00 − 3.10 = 1.90. Round = 2 SmartPoints. Low score reflects the high-protein/low-sugar composition — exactly the point of the WW system. Frequently asked questions
Is this the exact WW app number?
It is a close estimate of the classic SmartPoints formula (WW's 2015–2020 system), which was public knowledge from consumer reports and independent recreations. WW's current Personal Points system (2021+) customizes coefficients per user and has 'zero-point' foods that this calculator cannot know. For an exact number that matches your WW app, use the app or WW website — this calculator is an approximation for planning.
Why does protein reduce points but total fat doesn't?
SmartPoints was designed to push eaters toward higher-protein, lower-added-sugar diets. Protein is satiating and metabolically expensive to digest, so WW rewards it. Total fat is not penalized because non-saturated fats (olive oil, nuts) are generally recognized as healthy in moderation; the penalty focused on saturated fat as a proxy for less healthy sources.
How do I use points day-to-day?
WW assigns each user a daily points 'budget' based on age, sex, height, weight, and activity level, plus a weekly bonus pool. Track points-per-food eaten across the day; stay at or below the daily budget, dipping into weekly bonus for special events. This calculator scores foods; it does not compute your personal budget. For a WW-adjacent daily calorie budget, use /en/calculators/nutrition/tdee-calculator/.
Are there foods with zero SmartPoints?
Yes — WW's zero-point food list historically included most non-starchy vegetables (broccoli, greens, peppers, mushrooms), most fresh fruits, and (in Blue/Purple plans) lean proteins like chicken breast and eggs. This calculator does not know that list, so it will assign small point values to those foods. In actual WW use, those items count as zero regardless of what the formula produces.
