Social Anxiety Calculator
Estimate your social anxiety level using comfort in social settings, fear of judgment, and tendency to avoid social situations. Useful for personal reflection or tracking progress during therapy.
About this calculator
Social anxiety is characterized by intense fear of negative evaluation and avoidance of social interactions. This calculator translates three dimensions into a single score. Social comfort is reverse-scored — because higher comfort means lower anxiety — using the expression (11 − social_comfort), so a comfort rating of 9 contributes only 2 to the anxiety total. Fear of judgment and social avoidance are scored directly. The formula is: Social Anxiety Score = ((11 − social_comfort) + fear_of_judgment + social_avoidance) / 3. Scores range from 1 (very low anxiety) to 10 (very high anxiety). Scores consistently above 7 may warrant professional consultation. This tool is for self-awareness only and does not constitute a clinical diagnosis.
How to use
Say you feel somewhat comfortable in groups (social_comfort = 5), are quite worried about others' opinions (fear_of_judgment = 8), and occasionally avoid parties (social_avoidance = 6). Calculate step by step: reverse-score comfort → 11 − 5 = 6. Now average: Social Anxiety Score = (6 + 8 + 6) / 3 = 20 / 3 ≈ 6.7. A score of 6.7 indicates moderate-to-high social anxiety. Working on cognitive reframing to reduce fear_of_judgment would have the largest impact on lowering the overall score.
Frequently asked questions
How does the social comfort reverse scoring work in the social anxiety formula?
Because social comfort is the opposite of anxiety, a high comfort score should reduce the anxiety total, not increase it. To achieve this, the formula subtracts social_comfort from 11, converting a comfort score of 10 into an anxiety contribution of 1, and a comfort score of 1 into a contribution of 10. This inversion ensures all three inputs push in the same direction — higher values always mean more anxiety — making the average meaningful and consistent.
What is the difference between shyness and social anxiety measured by this calculator?
Shyness is a personality trait involving mild discomfort in new social situations, while social anxiety is a more intense and persistent fear of judgment that interferes with daily functioning. On this calculator, a shy person might score moderate fear_of_judgment but low social_avoidance, yielding a score around 4–5. True social anxiety typically shows high scores across all three dimensions, especially avoidance and fear of judgment, pushing the total above 6–7. Clinical social anxiety disorder requires professional diagnosis beyond any self-report tool.
When should someone seek professional help based on their social anxiety score?
If your score is consistently 7 or above across multiple check-ins, it may indicate that social anxiety is significantly affecting your quality of life. Signs that professional support is warranted include avoiding work events, cancelling plans regularly, or experiencing physical symptoms like panic in social settings. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most evidence-backed treatment for social anxiety disorder. This calculator can be a useful starting point for a conversation with a therapist but should never replace clinical assessment.
