Running Pace Calculator
Convert any combination of hours, minutes, and seconds over a chosen distance into your per-km or per-mile running pace. Essential for race planning, treadmill calibration, and workout logging.
About this calculator
Running pace expresses how many minutes it takes to cover one unit of distance. This calculator uses the formula: Pace (min/km) = ((Hours × 3600) + (Minutes × 60) + Seconds) ÷ Distance ÷ 60. First, total elapsed time is converted entirely into seconds. Dividing by distance gives seconds per unit, and a final division by 60 converts to minutes per unit. The result can be displayed in min/km or min/mile depending on the distance unit selected. Understanding pace is critical for structuring training zones: easy runs, tempo efforts, and race-day targets are all defined in pace ranges. Splitting the time input into hours, minutes, and seconds makes it easy to enter GPS watch results directly without manual conversion.
How to use
You finish a half marathon (21.0975 km) in 1 hour 45 minutes 30 seconds. Enter Distance = 21.0975 km, Hours = 1, Minutes = 45, Seconds = 30. Total seconds = (1 × 3600) + (45 × 60) + 30 = 3600 + 2700 + 30 = 6330 seconds. Pace = 6330 ÷ 21.0975 ÷ 60 = 299.8 ÷ 60... let's recalculate: 6330 ÷ 21.0975 = 299.8 sec/km; 299.8 ÷ 60 ≈ 4.996 min/km ≈ 4:60, effectively 5:00 min/km. That translates to approximately 8:03 min/mile — a solid half-marathon effort for a recreational runner.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my running pace from a GPS watch time and distance?
Read the total elapsed time and distance directly from your watch and enter each component — hours, minutes, and seconds — into the corresponding fields. The calculator converts everything to seconds, divides by your distance, then divides again by 60 to give minutes per kilometer or mile. This is more accurate than mental math because it eliminates rounding errors when dealing with odd distances and times. For treadmill runs where distance may be in miles, simply switch the unit selector to miles before calculating.
What is the difference between running pace and running speed?
Pace is time per unit of distance (e.g., 5:30 min/km), while speed is distance per unit of time (e.g., 10.9 km/h). They convey the same information but in inverse form. Runners typically use pace because it maps directly to race finishing times — a constant 5:00 min/km over 10 km yields exactly 50 minutes. Cyclists and swimmers more often use speed. To convert pace (min/km) to speed (km/h), divide 60 by the pace value: 60 ÷ 5.0 = 12 km/h.
How should I use my calculated pace to plan race splits?
Once you know your target finishing time, use this calculator in reverse: enter the desired time and race distance to find the required pace per kilometer or mile. Then divide the race into segments and assign each a split time by multiplying pace by segment distance. For marathons and half-marathons, most coaches recommend negative splitting — running the second half 1–2% faster than the first. Print or memorize your target splits per 5 km marker so you can check progress on course without relying solely on a GPS watch.
