Yoga Mat Size Calculator

Find the ideal yoga mat length based on your height and arm span so you never run off the edge mid-pose. Helpful when buying a mat online where you can't test it in person.

About this calculator

The recommended mat length is the largest of three values: a height-based length, an arm-span-based length, and a universal minimum. The formula is: matLength = max(height × 1.5 + 30, max(armSpan × 1.1, 183)) cm. The height × 1.5 + 30 term ensures you have 50% extra length beyond your height plus a 30 cm buffer for overhead reach. armSpan × 1.1 adds a 10% buffer around your widest dimension for poses like Warrior II. The hard floor of 183 cm reflects the industry standard 'long' mat length, which accommodates practitioners up to roughly 175 cm. Taking the maximum of all three prevents undersizing for any body proportion.

How to use

Take a practitioner 170 cm tall with a 168 cm arm span. Height-based length = 170 × 1.5 + 30 = 255 + 30 = 285 cm. Arm-span-based length = 168 × 1.1 = 184.8 cm. Universal minimum = 183 cm. matLength = max(285, max(184.8, 183)) = max(285, 184.8) = 285 cm. This person needs a 285 cm (about 9.4 ft) extra-long mat — significantly longer than the standard 183 cm mat sold in most stores. Shorter practitioners (e.g., 155 cm, arm span 152 cm): height term = 262.5 cm, still the dominant value, suggesting a 263 cm mat.

Frequently asked questions

What size yoga mat do I need for my height?

The general rule is that your mat should be at least 1.5 times your height plus 30 cm of buffer, so a 170 cm tall person needs roughly a 285 cm mat for full comfort. Standard mats (183 cm / 6 ft) suit practitioners up to about 155 cm comfortably; 'long' mats at 200–215 cm cover most people up to 180 cm. Extra-long mats at 240 cm+ are widely available online and are worth the investment if you frequently practice reclined poses or inversions. Width matters too — standard 61 cm width suits most, but 76 cm wide mats give more lateral room for wide-stance poses.

Does arm span affect what yoga mat size I should buy?

Yes — your arm span determines comfort in wide lateral poses like Warrior II, Triangle, and Star Pose, where your hands can easily extend beyond the mat's length if it's undersized. This calculator applies a 10% buffer over your arm span to give you clear mat space at your fingertips. For most people height is the dominant measurement, but practitioners with unusually wide arm spans relative to their height — common in taller individuals — may find the arm-span calculation sets the mat length recommendation.

What is the difference between a standard and an extra-long yoga mat?

Standard yoga mats are 173–183 cm long and 61 cm wide, which is adequate for practitioners under roughly 160 cm. Long mats (200–215 cm) accommodate practitioners up to about 180 cm and are the most common upgrade purchase. Extra-long mats (240–300 cm) are niche products designed for tall yogis, those who practice dynamic flows with large lunges, or teachers who want room to demonstrate and assist simultaneously. Thickness (3–6 mm standard, up to 10 mm for joint support) is a separate decision from length and does not affect the size recommendation from this calculator.
